Macron: NATO should shape Ukraine's accession prospects

Jun 29, 2023

On Wednesday, June 28, French President Emmanuel Macron said that the NATO summit in Vilnius should formulate a concrete path to Ukraine's membership in the Alliance.

Macron said this while speaking with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the Elysee Palace in Paris, Euractiv reports.

"We will have to determine the way to shape the prospect of Ukraine's accession to NATO, which we opened in 2008 in Bucharest," Macron said. He added that at the summit in Vilnius, NATO will decide on further support for Ukraine.

"The decisions we will make will commit us for years to come - I mean, first of all, to support Ukraine, in which we must make a long-term commitment," Macron emphasized.

Macron noted that the allies are helping Ukraine "reform the Ukrainian armed forces, promote interoperability with the Alliance forces, and provide support in the non-lethal sector".

As EuroPravda wrote, contrary to stereotypes, France and President Macron personally are now lobbying for Ukraine's invitation to join NATO.

The NATO leaders' summit will take place on July 11-12 in Vilnius.
