Melnyk called on Germany to take the lead on fighter jets

Feb 7, 2023

Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andriy Melnyk again called on the German federal government to take more leadership in supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression.

He said this on the air of broadcaster ZDF, reports Tagesschau.

"The time has come for Germany to actually do what it has announced, which is to play this leadership role," Melnyk said.

The former Ukrainian ambassador repeated his call for the German government to deliver the promised 14 Leopard 2 tanks as quickly as possible, as well as combat aircraft and support for the navy.

Germany can help with fighters such as the Eurofighter and Tornado, he said, noting that the war against Russia cannot be won on the ground alone.

The German federal government has so far refused to supply Ukraine with fighter jets.
