Milley told what will play crucial role in Ukraine's counteroffensive

The tanks are to provide firepower and strength to Ukrainian defenders and play a crucial role in Ukraine's long-awaited counteroffensive.

This was stated by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley, CNN reports.

He emphasized that tanks are very important for both defense and offense.

"Upgraded modern tanks, the training that goes with it, the ability to use them will be fundamental to Ukrainian success," Milley said.

According to the general, the tanks will operate in a coordinated fashion with artillery, infantry and more when the counteroffensive begins.

He noted that heavy armored vehicles, which the Ukrainians are already mastering, are currently a more important component for the counteroffensive. At the same time, the plans to provide Ukraine with F-16s and other similar systems are more of a long-term plan to equip Ukraine with a modern air force that can better withstand Russia's vastly superior air force.

"Everyone recognizes that Ukraine needs a modernized air force and everyone knows that. It’s going to take a considerable length of time,  effort, money, to build that air force," he added.
