Nauseda: We must cross all "red lines" in military assistance

Apr 25, 2023

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda believes that Ukraine's allies should provide all the necessary military assistance, including weapons.

He said this in an interview with the German newspaper Spiegel.

"It is absolutely clear to me that we must cross all the red lines. Otherwise, we are wasting time. People are being killed and tortured every day. Deportation of children is commonplace, as is the bombing of infrastructure. Looking back, we lost time because we hesitated for a long time to make certain decisions. In the end, we came to these decisions anyway, but too late and at a very high cost. We have to be very decisive because we are dealing with a very dangerous aggressor who knows no borders. Don't expect him to ever stop - if he succeeds, he will always continue," Nauseda said.

When asked whether he was also referring to the supply of Western fighter jets to Ukraine, Nauseda answered in the affirmative.

"Yes, some countries are already supplying other types of aircraft. Airspace is an important element in this war. And in order to be able to effectively defend it, we need airplanes and more air defense systems. This is important not only for Ukraine but also for our security," he said.

Nauseda noted that Germany has rethought the issue of assistance to Ukraine, after which other countries have also stepped up.

"Many of the red lines that we drew ourselves have been crossed. And Germany's decision is a positive signal not only for Ukraine but for all other NATO allies," he added.
