Russia and Iran have signed a declaration in which they promised to work together to counter Western sanctions imposed on both countries.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said this on Tuesday during a meeting with his Iranian counterpart in Moscow, as quoted by the Russian news agency Interfax.
"We have just signed a declaration on ways and means to counteract, mitigate, and compensate for the negative consequences of unilateral coercive measures," Lavrov said.
The Russian minister said that this was an important step to "overcome the illegal sanctions that the United States and its allies have made a substitute for diplomacy."
Lavrov's meeting with the head of Iranian diplomacy took place on the sidelines of a ministerial meeting of the five Caspian Sea countries - Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan.
It is worth noting that Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi will visit Moscow on Thursday, December 7.
