The United States does not view the bilateral security agreement signed with Ukraine as a "substitute" for its membership in NATO. The document is "part of the bridge" on this path, said Deputy Spokesperson for the US Department of State Vedant Patel.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to Ukrinform.

"You saw the Secretary of State and the current president talking about how important it is to have a bridge to Ukraine's membership in NATO. Of course, this bilateral security agreement is not a substitute for that (Ukraine's membership in NATO - ed.)," Patel said.

According to him, the United States sees the agreement with Ukraine "as part of a bridge for Ukraine to join NATO one day."

The State Department spokesman also reiterated that the United States supports the open door policy to the Alliance.
