President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen has announced an invitation to Ukraine to join the Energy Platform for joint gas purchases.

According to European Pravda, she said this during a press conference with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv.

"We invite Ukraine into our Energy Platform for joint gas purchases," she said.

"You know the principle: we want to make the best possible use of our common market power. So we will get through this winter, dear Volodymyr, and many more to come," von der Leyen said.

As reported, the European Commission wants EU countries to start buying gas together well in advance of the summer to avoid a supply crisis next winter.

The Commission intends to publish the amounts of gas that European countries plan to buy together in early spring to attract bids from suppliers.

EU countries must ensure that their local companies participate in the aggregation of gas demand in amounts equivalent to 15 percent of the gas needed to fill that country's storage facilities to 90 percent of capacity.
