The upgraded Tu-95MSM missile carrier can carry 18 missiles

The Air Force is modernizing the missile carrier Tu-95 in the MSM modification in order to increase its combat capabilities. The current version can carry six X-555s on board, which are in the drum. Another eight X-101 missiles the bomber carries on pylons under the wings. After modernization, their number will increase to 12.

Experts believe that the decision to modernize the Soviet bombers was made based on the experience gained in the war with Ukraine. They warn that the increase in the number of missiles will have a negative impact on the range of the missile carrier, which is its "hobbyhorse". The current modification is capable of covering a distance of up to 15 thousand kilometers.

Range of MSM modification will directly depend on the payload weight, altitude, and weather conditions. In some cases, it can be reduced in order to increase the efficiency of the mission.

This week it became known that the development of the missile carrier "Messenger" entered the final stage. Tupolev designers have applied stealth technology to it. The Kremlin plans to replace the Soviet Tu-160 as well as Tu-22M3 with the new missile carrier.
