The administration of U.S. President Joe Biden is seriously considering supplying Ukraine with cluster munitions. This is a very effective weapon against masses of Russian infantry.

This was reported by CNN.

"These would undoubtedly have a significant battlefield impact," a U.S. official told CNN.

Officials told CNN that a final decision from the White House is expected soon and that if approved, the weapons could be included in a new military aid package for Ukraine as early as next month.

Ukrainian officials have been asking the U.S. for the ammunition since last year, saying it would boost supplies for Western artillery and missile systems and help reduce Russia's numerical advantage in artillery.

But the U.S. has been reluctant to provide them because of the risk they could pose to civilians and because some key U.S. allies, including the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, have signed on to a ban on cluster munitions, weapons that scatter "bombs" over large areas that may not explode on impact and can pose a long-term risk to anyone who comes into contact with them, similar to landmines.

It is worth noting that the Pentagon has previously stated that cluster munitions can be effectively used by Ukrainian forces against Russian troops in the trenches.

The 2008 pact, which bans the production, use, and stockpiling of cluster munitions, has been adopted by 123 countries, including most of NATO's 28 members. The United States, Russia, and Ukraine refused to join the pact.
