Ukraine's membership in NATO is an effective guarantee of security

Jul 4, 2023

The NATO summit in Vilnius should correct the mistakes made in the past during the conclusion of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum and the 2008 Bucharest Summit and should be an opportunity to provide Ukraine with security guarantees that go beyond sending weapons.

Ilhan Küçük, Member of the European Parliament and co-president of the ALDE party writes about this in his column "Ukraine's NATO membership is the only effective security guarantee" for Euractiv.

The MEP notes that a dangerous narrative is being spread in some European capitals that there is some kind of alternative to Ukraine's membership in NATO.

"It is as follows: Ukraine is becoming a kind of gray area between the democratic world and Russia, constantly at war, but to some extent prosperous, with a strong army and constant financial and political support from Western allies," the politician writes.

However, according to him, the inconvenient truth is that any alternative to NATO membership will be perceived as another concession by the West to the Kremlin in order not to "provoke" Russia.

"The upcoming NATO summit in Vilnius is not just another summit. It needs to correct some serious mistakes made in the past during the 1994 Budapest Memorandum and the 2008 Bucharest Summit. Moreover, this is a great opportunity to provide Ukraine with security guarantees that go beyond sending weapons," the MEP emphasizes.
