Ukrainian women handed Lloyd Austin a flag from Kherson Oblast

Nov 21, 2022

Ukrainian activists and the military during a forum on security in Halifax (Canada) handed US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin a flag that was hidden by a local resident in the occupied Kherson region.

Darya Kalenyuk, executive director of the Anti-Corruption Center, which has been advocating for arms transfers since the start of the full-scale war, told European Pravda in Halifax.

"We got a chance to talk briefly with U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and gave him a flag. This flag is very symbolic. A Ukrainian woman who lived in an occupied village in the Kherson region took it down from a flagpole in the center of the village when the Russians went in there. For 8.5 months, while the occupation was going on, she kept this flag, hid it, risking her life if this flag was found," Kaleniuk told EuroPravda.

From the woman who hid the flag, it came to the military. "When the AFU liberated this village - she gave this flag to our defenders, and they signed it, so it's very beautiful and very symbolic," the activist added.

To pass this flag to the head of the Pentagon was assigned Senior Lieutenant Yulia Mikitenko, who immediately before the trip to Halifax fought in eastern Ukraine.
