US and allies tell where DPRK hackers steal military secrets

Jul 25, 2024

North Korean hackers are conducting a global cyberespionage campaign to steal classified military secrets to support Pyongyang's banned nuclear weapons program.

This was stated in a joint report by the United States, the United Kingdom, and South Korea, Reuters reports.

Hackers from the DPRK, whom cybersecurity researchers have dubbed APT45, attacked and hacked into some computer systems of a wide range of defense and engineering companies, including manufacturers of tanks, submarines, warships, and fighters, as well as missile and radar systems, the allies' report said.

“(Our) agencies believe that the groups and cyber technologies remain an ongoing threat to various industries around the world...” they said.

The document was co-authored by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the US National Security Agency (NSA), and cyber agencies - the UK's National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) and the National Intelligence Service of South Korea (NIS).

“The global cyberespionage operation we uncovered today shows just how far DPRK-funded actors are willing to go to advance their military and nuclear programs,” said NCSC spokesman Paul Chichester.
