White House prepares to revise red lines due to Russia's offensive

May 29, 2024

The White House is preparing to abandon its own red lines because of the aggressor country Russia's offensive in Ukraine, The Washington Post reports.

It is noted that US President Joe Biden is considering two new tough countermeasures. These include punishing China for supplying key technologies to Moscow, as well as lifting restrictions on Ukraine's use of American weapons to strike targets in Russia.

Political commentator David Ignatius writes that these steps would be a significant escalation of Biden's “carefully calibrated policy.”

According to him, the fact that such steps are being considered now shows the White House's concern about Ukraine's vulnerability on the battlefield.

In May, U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken visited Kyiv and heard firsthand about Russia's advances near Kharkiv and other areas in eastern Ukraine.

Blinken was so concerned by what he heard that he urged his White House colleagues to reconsider the ban on Ukraine firing American artillery and short-range missiles into Russian territory, the journalist noted.
