On May 22, Norway, Ireland, and Spain declared the recognition of Palestine as an independent state.
Norway's recognition of Palestine was announced by Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, NRK reports.
According to Støre, a Palestinian state is "absolutely essential" for peace in the Middle East.
"When we recognize Palestine, we can more strongly encourage other countries to support the development of a Palestinian state, and we can hold the Palestinian state accountable," he said.
The Norwegian government's decision will come into force on May 28.
