New Russian weapons can attack other satellites in Earth's orbit. Such a Russian satellite is now located in the same place as the US government satellite, said the official representative of the Pentagon, Major General Patrick Ryder.

According to the Pentagon, on May 16, Russia launched the Kosmos 2576 satellite into low Earth orbit, which is an anti-space weapon and can shoot down other satellites, reports ABC News.

"Russia has launched a satellite into low Earth orbit that we believe is most likely an anti-space weapon,"

Rynder said, noting that Russian weapons are likely capable of attacking other satellites and confirming information previously disclosed by Robert Wood, deputy US ambassador to the UN.

The major general said the Pentagon would monitor the new object in orbit.

"We are obliged to be ready to defend the space sphere and provide constant and uninterrupted support to the joint forces. And we will continue to balance the need to protect our interests in space and our desire to maintain a stable and stable space environment," said a Pentagon representative.

When asked if a Russian anti-space weapon poses a threat to an American satellite, Ryder said:

"Well, it's an anti-space weapon that's in the same orbit as a US government satellite."

While there are requirements for advance notification from the air and from the sea for space launches, Ryder did not discuss whether the US knew in advance that the missile contained a certain type of anti-space weapon.

The Russian satellite "Cosmos 2576" was launched on May 16 from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in Russia, about 800 km north of Moscow. In its statement, the Russian state space agency Roscosmos said that the launch was "in the interests of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation."

According to him, his Soyuz-2.1b launch vehicle was used.
