Bulgaria demands €400 million in compensation from Gazprom

May 17, 2024

The Bulgarian state-owned company Bulgargaz will seek compensation for losses caused by Gazprom's early termination of natural gas supplies. The amount is in excess of 400 million euros. According to Expert.bg, this was stated by the acting Minister of Energy, Vladimir Malinov.

The Russian supplier stopped supplying the Bulgarian side in April 2022. The reason was Bulgargaz's refusal to pay for gas in rubles.

The Bulgarian Ministry of Energy clarified that it would give Gazprom some time to voluntarily resolve the issue.

“I consider a delay of more than two years unacceptable,” Malinov said.

If no agreement is reached, Bulgargaz will file a lawsuit with the Arbitration Court of the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris.

The Energy Minister added that the €400 million will be used to build a new gas pipeline.
