All three road bridges on right bank of Dnipro can no longer be used

Aug 15, 2022

Ukrainian forces again struck the Antonivsky road bridge near Kherson City overnight on August 13-14.

Due to that, they have likely ensured that all three road bridges into central Kherson Oblast remain unusable, the Institute for the Study of War reports.

Ukrainian government sources confirmed that Ukrainian forces struck the Antonivsky road bridge and stated that military convoys cannot cross the bridge. Footage of the strikes shows explosions from the Antonivsky Bridge as the missiles likely struck Russian military equipment, ammunition, or fuel transports on the bridge.

Natalia Humenyuk, head of the joint press center of the Southern Defense Forces, confirmed during the Ukrainian national telethon, that Ukrainian forces had again attacked the Antonivsky bridge. Gumenyuk stressed that the Ukrainian Armed Forces intend to help the occupants make a new “goodwill gesture” and consolidate the status of the Antonivsky bridge as impassable, NV reports.

“This means that the transportation of heavy equipment and ammunition supplies is incredibly difficult, to the point of being impossible,” she said.

Humenyuk added that the Armed Forces of Ukraine continue to clarify the results of strikes on bridges in the Kherson region. She also said that the Russian command is using the remnants of transport routes to evacuate to the left bank of the Dnipro River.

When the bridges are completely destroyed, the occupants remaining on the right bank will have to “accept the will of the AFU”, Humenyuk noted.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian First Deputy Head of Kherson Oblast Rada (parliament) Yuriy Sobolevsky claimed that a significant portion of the Russian military command left Kherson City, likely to avoid being trapped in Kherson City if Ukrainian strikes cut off all ground lines of communication connecting the right bank of the Dnipro River to the Russian rear, the ISW says.

As a reminder, the first strike on the Antonivsky bridge became known on July 19. On the night of August 8, the Ukrainian military carried out new strikes on the Antonivsky and Kakhovka automobile bridges.

On August 12, it was reported that the Armed Forces of Ukraine carried out further strikes on the bridge near the temporarily occupied Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant.
