On Sunday, December 8, the regime of dictator Bashar al-Assad finally fell in Syria. The United States, for its part, “strongly supports” the peaceful transfer of power to an accountable Syrian government after the rebels seized power.
This was stated by U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, RBC-Ukraine reports citing CNN.
“During this transitional period, the Syrian people have every right to demand the preservation of state institutions, the resumption of key services and the protection of vulnerable communities,” he said.
Blinken also said that the United States will support international efforts to hold the Assad regime and its supporters accountable for the atrocities and abuses committed against the Syrian people. This includes the use of chemical weapons and the unjust detention of civilians.
According to the Secretary of State, the United States has taken note of the statements of the leaders of the rebel coalition “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham”. Meanwhile, the U.S. side calls on all parties to respect human rights, take all precautions to protect civilians and comply with international humanitarian law.
“As they assume a great deal of responsibility, we will be evaluating not only their words but also their actions,” Blinken summarized.-
