The regime of dictator Bashar al-Assad has fallen in Syria. This event is a strategic political defeat for Moscow.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing a report by the American Institute for the Study of War.
Before drawing conclusions, analysts remind that Russia intervened in the Syrian issue in 2015 to protect the Assad regime after mass protests began in 2011 as part of the larger Arab Spring movement. As a result, it provoked a civil war in Syria and threatened to oust Assad.
In turn, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has long viewed the “color revolutions” that led to the emergence of new democratic governments in former Soviet republics as a threat to the stability and security of his own regime.
Putin also broadly opposes democratic movements to remove authoritarian rulers with ties to the Kremlin around the world. He believes that these movements interfere with his efforts to create his imagined multipolar world in which Russia and its key authoritative allies and partners play an important role.
