This is reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the UK Ministry of Defense in X (Twitter).
According to the report, at least some of the group's cyber operations were aimed at supporting Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
According to British intelligence, the operations included the use of the WhisperGate malware against Ukrainian targets in 2022. Other activities included hacking websites and scanning networks for espionage. Previously attributed to the Russian state, WhisperGate has now been linked directly to the GRU's Unit 29155.
Unit 29155 is believed to be responsible for attempted coups, sabotage of influence operations, and assassination attempts across Europe.
“This once again emphasizes the value that the Russian state attaches to cyberspace in the context of its invasion of Ukraine,” the British Ministry of Defense said.
