EU prepares sanctions against Iran for supplying ballistic missiles

Sep 12, 2024

The European Union has begun preparing new sanctions against Iran. They will be part of the EU's response to the supply of Iranian ballistic missiles to Russia.

This was stated by EU Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Peter Stano, RBC-Ukraine reports citing his briefing.

He recalled that the EU was very clear about the consequences for Iran for supplying missiles to Russia during the European Council in March.

‘Back then, in their conclusions, EU leaders stressed that if this information is confirmed, it will have direct consequences. This will entail swift action by the EU in coordination with international partners, which will include the introduction of significant restrictive measures against Iran,’ Stano said.

According to him, Russia is trying to get more weapons from third countries to wage war against Ukraine. Thus, Iran is contributing to the escalation of the war with its supplies.

Stano noted that EU High Representative Josep Borrell had warned against the transfer of ballistic missiles to Russia during numerous contacts with his Iranian counterparts.

‘Since Iran is doing this, there will be a response, and it will be swift. The European Union and High Representative Borrell have already provided member states with proposals for targeted measures that will be part of the EU's response,’ the spokesman said.
