The large-scale bombing of the pagers of members of the Lebanese group Hezbollah was organized by the Israeli intelligence service Mossad. The operation was being prepared for a long time.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to Reuters.

According to a high-ranking source in the Lebanese security service, Hezbollah ordered 5,000 pagers from the Taiwanese company Gold Apollo, which were imported into the country earlier this year. The source showed a photo of the AP924 pager model, which, like other pagers, wirelessly receives and displays text messages but cannot make phone calls.

The militants use the pagers as low-tech communication devices in an attempt to evade Israeli tracking of their whereabouts. However, according to the Lebanese source, the devices were modified by the Israeli intelligence service “at the production level.”

“The Mossad implanted an explosive board in the device that can receive a code. It is very difficult to detect in any way. Even with the help of any device or scanner,” the source said.

The source said that 3,000 pagers exploded after sending a coded message, which simultaneously activated the explosives.

Another security source told Reuters that up to three grams of explosives were hidden in the new pagers, which Hezbollah had not noticed for months.

Pictures of the destroyed pagers analyzed by the agency showed the format and stickers on the back of the pagers, which correspond to pagers manufactured by Gold Apollo, a company based in Taipei, Taiwan.
