Iran transfers ballistic missiles to Russia

Sep 9, 2024

Iran has given Russia hundreds of short-range ballistic missiles to support the invasion of Ukraine. In exchange, Tehran may receive Russian Su-35 fighter jets.

This is reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

An anonymous US official confirmed to The Wall Street Journal that Iran has delivered missiles to Russia. A senior European official said that new shipments of Iranian missiles to the aggressor country are expected.

The report recalled that in December 2023, Iran and Russia signed a contract to ship Iranian Ababil short-range ballistic missiles and Fateh-360 short-range ballistic missiles. However, the ISW did not specify which missiles are part of the recently transferred batch to Russia.

The Institute for the Study of War also noted that on July 7, Reuters reported that Iran had expanded at least two of its defense industrial facilities outside Tehran since August and October 2023 to support the production of drones and missiles. Some of them are intended to be shipped to Russia.

“Russia is likely to use Iranian-provided ballistic missiles to strike Ukrainian energy, military, and civilian infrastructure over the coming fall and winter to further destabilize Ukrainian society and undermine Ukraine's defense industrial base,” the report says.
