Zelensky criticises China and Brazil's peace plan after the war

Sep 12, 2024

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has criticised the peace plan between China and Brazil to end the war, calling it ‘destructive’ and agreed in advance with the Kremlin. He said that the plan is only a ‘political statement’ and does not take into account the real situation.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to Metropoles.

Zelenskyy stressed that he had offered Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to discuss the issue together, but expressed surprise at why Brazil decided to take a ‘middle ground’ position and support Russia.

‘Their proposal is also destructive, it's just a political statement. I told the Brazilian president: ‘Let's sit down and talk together. You are not our enemies, we are not your enemies. Why have you suddenly decided that you have to side with Russia and be somewhere in the middle? We are not stupid,’ he said.

Zelenskyy also criticised the position of the Brazilian government, saying that Brazil is taking a ‘pro-Russian’ position in the context of the war in Eastern Europe.

In particular, Zelenskyy expressed disappointment that Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is seeking ‘political appeasement’ rather than taking a more vigorous stance on the conflict.

‘I had a good conversation with President Lula, and I felt like he understood me. I was grateful to meet with him and I was very open, absolutely open. I thought I would see in his experience an understanding of what was happening, not just political appeasement,’ he said.

Zelenskyy said he had expected more understanding from Lula after their meeting, but stressed that Brazil's efforts to find a peaceful solution remain unsuccessful because Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, whom the Ukrainian leader called a ‘murderer,’ shows no intention of ending the war.
