Is a ceasefire being discussed in exchange for Western guarantees?

Oct 11, 2024

Ukraine is not considering a ceasefire in order to obtain guarantees from the West. Russia may be spreading fake news about such concessions in the media.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing a joint statement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron following their meeting.

Rumors of a ceasefire

The head of the Ukrainian state was asked whether Ukraine is considering a ceasefire if it receives guarantees from Western countries.

“This is not a topic of our discussions, no truce, we did not want to talk about it. I saw something like that in the media. Russia works a lot with the media, with this information, so everything is clear,” Zelenskyy emphasized.

Meeting with Macron

After his talks with Macron, the Ukrainian president emphasized that he was counting on France's help, especially amid a shortage of equipment.

In particular, the leaders discussed authorizing the use of “certain long-range ammunition.” This is necessary for Ukraine, as drones are not enough for long distances, Zelenskyy explained.

In turn, Macron revealed the details of his meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart. According to him, there was a good exchange of views during the discussions.

“I would like to emphasize once again that France supports Ukrainian resistance to Russia's aggressive war. This is an important moment, and it was also an important step for us that we were able to exchange views with the President on the coming weeks and months, both on military and diplomatic work,” the French leader added.

He assured that France continues to fulfill its obligations both in terms of providing weapons and training for Ukrainian soldiers.
