Kallas clashes with former Estonian prime minister over European Parliament elections

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas is in conflict with one of the previous heads of the Estonian government, Andrus Ansip, over the European Parliament elections.

This was reported by ERR.

According to the portal, Kallas wrote a letter to Ansip, who is now an MEP, asking him not to run for election in June.

As a reason why Ansip should not run, Kallas points out that she knows nothing about his work in the European Parliament: "You only used your position in the EP to speak out on domestic policy and to curry favor with the government and your party."

"When the party is doing well, you sit back and wait for your chance. When the party is in a difficult situation, you are one of the first to publicly criticize it," Kallas added.

The Estonian prime minister declined to comment, saying only that these were internal party matters.

In response, Ansip called Kallas's calls for him "petty" and added that the content of the letter did not come as a surprise to him.

He noted that in March he will decide whether to run for the European Parliament.
