Latvia says Russian military drone crashed on its territory

On Saturday, September 7, a Russian military drone crashed in the Rezekne region in eastern Latvia.

According to the defense ministry, the responsible services continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident, but according to preliminary data, a Russian military drone flew into Latvian airspace from Belarus.

The Latvian Defense Forces, in accordance with established procedures, informed high-ranking officials, law enforcement and NATO commanders about the incident. An investigation is currently underway.

As far as is known, this is the first time since the beginning of the full-scale invasion that a Russian military drone has violated Latvian airspace.

Against this background, Defense Minister Andrius Sprūds emphasized that Latvia needs to continue the work it has begun to strengthen its eastern border, in particular, to develop air defense capabilities and electronic warfare.
