No treaties with Russia will end the war - former ambassador

Oct 10, 2024

The war in Ukraine cannot be ended by treaties with Russia. To end it, we need to get out of the contact war, and Ukraine's partners can help us do that.

Valeriy Chaly, former Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States and Chairman of the Board of the Ukrainian Crisis Media Center, said this in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.

“We need a plan to move from a large-scale war to a different intensity of conflict. We will not end the war with any agreements with Russia. We need to get out of the clash on land, where Kalashnikovs are fired and a lot of people die, where the war is contact, at a distance of 3, 5, 10 kilometers. How to get out? These are precision sniper weapons, howitzers, precision missiles. So the paradox is that Ukraine can move to a more humane war with the help of America and other partners,” he said.

The diplomat is convinced that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin may decide to end the war if he sees guaranteed support for Ukraine. According to Chaly, Putin needs war, but he does not care where to fight.

“Part of the goal is to destroy Ukraine as a country that has shown a successful model of development. But he also regrets the collapse of the Soviet Union, and restoring the empire is his goal. But he can restore it not immediately with Ukraine. He could go to the Baltic states, to the other side, he could go to Kazakhstan, discipline it a little bit, make it more allied, like Belarus. He could have done a lot of things. But our weakness brought him here. And this is his mistake, because it will destroy his model,” the former ambassador believes.
