Russians threaten to blow up the mined Zaporizhzhia NPP

Aug 8, 2022

The Russians are blackmailing the whole world by claiming that Zaporizhzhia NPP is mined and that they are ready to blow it up.

This was stated by Energoatom, the Ukrainian national atomic power generating company.

Energoatom claims that Major General Valery Vasilyev, head of the Russian Armed Forces’ radiation, chemical, and biological protection troops, who now commands the Zaporizhzhia NPP garrison, told his soldiers that “there will either be Russian soil here or a scorched desert”.

The Ukrainian agency quoted the Russian general:

“As you know, we have mined all the important facilities of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. And we are not hiding this from the enemy. We have warned them. The enemy knows that the plant will be either Russian or no one’s. We are ready for the consequences of this step. And you, the warriors-liberators, must understand that we have no other way. And if there is going to be the toughest order, we must carry it out with honor!” the general said.

According to Energoatom, Ukrainian intelligence has information about mining NPP power units by Russian troops.

As reported before Russian occupants fired missiles at Enerhodar in the evening of August 6, hitting the Zaporizhzhia NPP site directly next to the plant’s dry storage facility for spent nuclear fuel.

It was also reported earlier that the Russians intend to disconnect the Zaporizhzhia NPP from Ukraine.

UN Secretary General António Guterres demanded on Monday to stop the shelling of the plant and access to it for international inspectors, DW reports.

“Any attack to a nuclear plant is a suicidal thing,” Guterres said.

I hope that these attacks will stop, and at the same time I hope that the IAEA will be able to gain access to the plant,” Guterres said, without attributing responsibility for the shelling to either side. “We fully support the IAEA in all their efforts in relation to create the conditions of stabilization of the plant,” the UN secretary general added.
