The Prime Minister of Estonia: Ukraine will become a NATO member

Apr 27, 2023

NATO can become a real guarantee of Ukraine's security, but the country's membership in the Alliance is possible only after the war is over.

This was stated by the head of the Estonian government, Kaja Kallas, ERR reports.

Kallas visited Kyiv this week and met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to her, the Ukrainian president is most concerned about the supply of ammunition and weapons, but also about joining NATO and the EU.

"They (Ukrainians - Ed.) have applied, and NATO must respond to this application. If we are talking about providing Ukraine with any security guarantees, the only security guarantee that really works is NATO membership," Kallas said in the Ringvaade program on ETV.

She emphasized that Estonia is convincing member states to provide Ukraine with a clear membership perspective, but only after the war is over.

"For our part, we are trying to convince our allies why such a clear perspective after the war should be given to Ukraine so that these signals are clear. And, on the other hand, we are telling Ukraine what they also need to do in their rhetoric or persuasion efforts to move in that direction," Kallas explained.
