The project to supply Polish electricity to Ukraine is actually “frozen”

The project to produce electricity for Ukraine by Poland has not yet been implemented, and is practically frozen.

A source familiar with the situation told RBC-Ukraine.

“There is nothing new about this project, except for the statements made by the Polish side in the summer,” the source said.

The possibility of producing electricity for Ukraine at Polish thermal power plants was announced in July by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

The idea was to build a second power transmission line from Rzeszów (Poland) to Khmelnytsky NPP, which would allow to double the import capacity to 1.6 GW in the future. But at the same time, Poland wanted the European Commission to abolish the CO2 tax for coal-fired power generation.

So far, the idea has almost no chance of being realized, the source said. “Both technically (given the need to build a new line - ed.) and politically, it is not very feasible,” the source said.

He believes that it is unlikely that the EC will meet Poland's demands and abolish the emissions tax. In addition, for targeted electricity supplies, it will be necessary to change the rules of access to the interstate crossing. “Access is granted on a competitive basis, and in this case, it will be necessary to grant permanent access without any competition,” the source said.
