Trump's return could lead to an existential crisis for NATO

Feb 12, 2024

Foreign policy expert of the Christian Democratic and Christian Social Union factions in the German Bundestag Norbert Rettgen reacted to the recent resonant statements of former US President Donald Trump.

He said this in an interview with Bild.

According to the German MP, Trump's statements about refusing to help NATO allies who do not meet the requirements for defense spending are primarily directed against Germany.

"We must prepare for the fact that Donald Trump will win the US elections in the fall. This will plunge NATO into an existential crisis because Donald Trump views the defense alliance from a purely transactional point of view: those who, in his opinion, do not pay enough, will not be protected by the United States. He declares these countries to be legitimate targets of attack, and by that, he means us Germans," Röttgen said.

He added that Germany needs to prepare for Trump's re-election.

In his opinion, it is necessary to "understand that soon we may have no choice but to defend ourselves at a time when war is raging in Europe."

"We have to deal with this as Europeans because anything else would be a capitulation to Putin," Röttgen added.
