The first batch of American-made Abrams tanks was delivered to Ukraine on Saturday, September 23.
The New York Times reported this with reference to US officials.
According to the newspaper, the first tanks have already been delivered to Ukraine. They arrived several months ahead of initial estimates and in time to be used in the Ukrainian Armed Forces' counteroffensive.
Sources said that the rest of the Abrams tanks will be shipped in the coming months, noting that those that were sent to Ukraine were the first of 31 that President Joe Biden's administration promised to send.
It is unclear how many tanks have been delivered.
Later today, President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that the US Abrams tanks had arrived in Ukraine. Preparations are underway to reinforce the brigades with these tanks.
"Good news from (Ukrainian Defense Minister - ed.) Umerov. Abrams tanks are already in Ukraine and are preparing to reinforce our brigades. I am grateful to our allies for fulfilling the agreements! We are looking for new contracts, expanding the territory of supply," Zelensky wrote following the daily meeting.
