A group to investigate war crimes in Ukraine will be headed by US Justice Department official Eli Rosenbaum, the US's main “Nazi hunter”.
US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced this during his unannounced visit to Ukraine on Tuesday, CNN reports. The group will be comprised of experts in investigations involving human rights abuses and war crimes.
Eli Rosenbaum, a 67-year-old Jewish-American, has worked in the US Department of Justice for 36 years. Earlier, he occupied the post of the director of the US DOJ Office of Special Investigations, which was primarily responsible for identifying, denaturalizing, and deporting Nazi war criminals. According to the Justice Department, Rosenbaum helped the department in over 100 cases to strip citizenship from or deport accused Nazis. Hence, he has been termed a “legendary Nazi hunter”.
According to CNN, the announcement is a signal from the DOJ that it is interested in investigating war crimes in the ongoing war in Ukraine and follows a previous effort by the department to lock down the assets of Russian oligarchs.
