On the night of July 29, there was an explosion on the territory of the former penal colony in the village of Olenivka in the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk region. As a result, the building where Ukrainian prisoners of war from the Azovstal plant had been held was destroyed.

Immediately after the explosion, Russia accused the AFU of shelling the penal colony. According to the Russian side, more than 50 Ukrainian defenders were killed and the number of wounded is unknown.

Ukrainian officials stated that the explosion in Olenivka was a Russian terrorist act aimed at concealing war crimes, discrediting the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and disrupting the supply of weapons. They demanded that the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross immediately respond to the attack and send an inspection mission to the colony.

Many foreign officials condemned the terrorist attack.
