Polish President Andrzej Duda has promised that the Polish army will defend Lithuania if the Baltic country is attacked.

Duda said this in an interview with LRT.

The Polish president stressed that both Lithuania and Poland are NATO members, where there is a clear commitment under Article 5 of the NATO treaty on collective defense.

"I am quite firm in stating that it is difficult for me to imagine a situation in which, in the event of an attack on Lithuania, it would not receive assistance from NATO, including Poland. I mean military assistance. In short, the Polish military would come to Lithuania's defense. I cannot imagine any other option," Duda said.

He added that there are questions about other situations that are of concern but would not lead to the activation of Article 5.

"These issues should be resolved bilaterally between our countries, and our governments because we can agree on mutual support. I repeat: we are not talking about the situation at the military level, only at the level of threat. These are two separate issues," the Polish president said.
