Russia committed to clear Kobani of terrorists in 2019 but failed to do so, so Turkey will do it on its own.

According to Ukrinform with reference to CNN Türk, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters after a visit to Qatar.

"This time, two important regions were targeted: one is northern Iraq, the other is northern Syria. We have taken and will continue to take steps toward these regions. We also have an agreement with the Russians reached in Sochi in 2019. They were responsible for clearing terrorists from this area (Kobani - ed.). Unfortunately, despite the fact that we reminded them many times, they did not do it, they cannot do it," Erdogan said.

According to him, Turkey took up this matter on its own.

"We said that we would not stand aside and that we would take steps against terrorists there if they (Russians - ed.) could not do it themselves. As part of this, yesterday we neutralized 12 targets against terrorists based in Kobane, hitting them," the Turkish president said.

As Ukrinform reported, on Sunday night, the Turkish authorities announced the launch of the operation "Claw-Sword" in northern Syria and Iraq, aimed against the banned in the country "Kurdistan Workers' Party" and the Kurdish "People's Protection Units" (YPG).

The operation took place a week after an explosion in Istanbul on November 13, which killed six people and injured 81 others. Turkey believes it was a terrorist attack involving both Kurdish groups. It was established that the instructions for the explosion came from Kobani.
