Jun 28, 2024

The leaders of the EU member states have expressed serious concern over recent events in Georgia, in particular, the adoption of the scandalous law "On Transparency of Foreign Influence."

According to Yevropeiska Pravda, this is stated in the final decision of the EU summit, the first day of which was held the day before in Brussels.

In particular, the EU leaders noted that with the adoption of the law, Georgia has retreated from the steps set out in the Commission's recommendation for candidate status.

"The European Council calls on the Georgian authorities to clarify their intentions by changing the current course of action, which jeopardizes Georgia's path to the EU and de facto halts the accession process," the document says.

The EU also called for an end to acts of intimidation, threats and physical attacks on civil society representatives, political leaders, civic activists and journalists in Georgia.

The European Council calls on the Georgian authorities to ensure that this fall's parliamentary elections are free and fair, and encourages partners to provide substantial long-term and short-term election observation.
