Russian President Vladimir Putin should not be arrested if he turns out to be the only person with whom to negotiate peace in Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron stated this, The Guardian reports.

"If in a few months, we have a window for negotiations, we will have to make a choice between the court and negotiations, and we have to negotiate with those leaders who are de facto. I believe that negotiations will be a priority," the French leader emphasized.

According to Macron, Russia has lost all legitimacy, but if the upcoming Ukrainian counteroffensive does not achieve its military goals, it will be necessary to "assess the nature of future European support for Ukraine." At the same time, he noted that Ukraine is defending its borders and European ones.

The French president emphasized that Russia has suffered obvious setbacks in the war against Ukraine.

"The war is far from over, but one thing is clear: Ukraine will not be conquered. We see that what was supposed to be a 'special operation' is already a geopolitical failure," Macron added.
