Polish general has best chance to head EU Military Committee

Apr 15, 2024

Polish General Sławomir Wojciechowski has the best chance of leading the EU Military Committee, the highest military body of the European Union.

This has been reported by RMF FM.

In a month, the EU Chiefs of Defence will elect a new chairman of the EU Military Committee. This committee is the highest military body of the European Union, consisting of the chiefs of staff of the armed forces of all 27 member states.

General Wojciechowski is currently Poland's representative on the EU and NATO military committees.

As RMF FM's journalist found out, Slovenia and Ireland, in addition to Poland, have also nominated candidates for the highest military post in the EU, but the Polish general has the best chance.

No other major country has put forward a candidate, leaving the field open for Warsaw. This increases General Wojciechowski's chances.

"A Pole in this position would be a good signal of European involvement in supporting Ukraine," commented a diplomat close to EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell.

The current chairman of the EU Military Committee, Robert Briger, comes from neutral Austria, which has reservations about military assistance to Kyiv.
