Apr 17, 2024

The head of the Dutch government, Mark Rutte, said that he is very "saddened" by the fact that Russia is destroying the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.

The statement was made before the EU leaders' summit in Brussels, The Guardian reports.

Asked what he thought about the words of the city's mayor, Igor Terekhov, that it risks becoming a "second Aleppo", Rutte said that the situation was "extremely sad".

"I was in Kharkiv myself on 1 March. A missile from Russia reaches there in one minute, and ... the air raid warning does not have time to sound before the missile reaches Kharkiv," he said.

Rutte said he was impressed when he saw teachers conducting classes at metro stations and "how they are trying to establish a normal teaching process as much as possible."
