Scholz rejects Putin's "so-called peace talks proposal"

Jun 26, 2024

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has rejected calls for peace talks in response to the so-called "peace plan" previously proposed by Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin.

According to BR, he said this during a speech in the Bundestag.

Scholz emphasized that Putin is still committed to war and his proposal only confirms this.

"Putin is still fully committed to war and rearmament, no one can ignore this," he said.

This is "most clearly evidenced by his so-called ceasefire proposal," the chancellor said.

The proposal requires Ukraine to give up the territories not yet occupied by Russian troops and refuse any military assistance in the future.

Anyone who thinks that "this will lead to lasting peace in Europe should watch a lot of Russia Today," Scholz said, referring to the Moscow-controlled TV channel.

"Unfortunately, Russia does not want peace," he said.
