The Kremlin invites the Taliban to its main economic forum

May 27, 2024

The Russian authorities have officially invited the Taliban, who seized power in Afghanistan in the summer of 2021, to participate in a key business event in Russia. This is the annual St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on June 5-8, Reuters reports.

This forum, before Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin's decision to unleash a full-scale war in Ukraine, was attended by Western leaders and leading investment bankers from the United States and Europe. Russian aggression has caused the biggest crisis in Russia's relations with the Western world since the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.

By the way, the Taliban, a radical Sunni Islamist movement, is officially recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia. However, this does not prevent the Russian leadership from gradually establishing bilateral ties since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021.
