This was announced by the representative of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense,DIU Andrii Yusov during the discussion "Civilians in illegal detention by Russia: joint steps of the authorities and civil society for their release", reports Ukrinform.

"We are talking about more than 14,000 civilians (who are in captivity of the Russian Federation - ed.), officially recognized, according to human rights organizations, as our partners. This number can be much higher. And also (there are data on - ed.) about 2,000 victims of enforced disappearances over 70 years old," said Yusov.

According to him, as of now, the ICRC has confirmed 868 cases of the stay of civilians in places of detention in the Russian Federation. At the same time, he noted, in fact, this figure is many times higher.

"But the very fact that the ICRC defines and recognizes the stay of civilians in places of deprivation of liberty... this is already recognition of the fact of war crimes, a direct violation of the Geneva Conventions by the Russian Federation," said the representative of the DIU.
