Russia has lost more than 60,000 troops in its attempts to capture the city of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region. This assessment was made by an unnamed Western official in a commentary to Sky News.

"We believe that the capture of Bakhmut probably cost Russia at least 60,000 casualties in the Bakhmut-Popasna sector during the year-long battle," the official said.

It is clarified that 60 thousand is a conservative estimate of Russian losses in this section of the front, which includes both wounded and dead. At least a third of them, according to the official, are dead.

The source called Bakhmut a strategically unimportant city and added that, according to the West, Ukrainian units have withdrawn from the main built-up part of the city.

"We see that the Wagner group forces are in the process of withdrawing (from Bakhmut - Glavkom), at least as of now. Replacing these power elements will require significant efforts from the already overloaded Russian regular forces," the official explained.
