First EU company to refuse to buy Russian liquefied gas

Jun 25, 2024

The Finnish state-owned gas supply company Gasum will no longer purchase liquefied natural gas from Russia. This happened after the introduction of the 14th package of EU sanctions.

This was reported by the press service of Gasum.

"Gasum complies with all sanctions imposed by the EU and will not buy or import Russian LNG from July 26," the energy company said in a statement.

It is noted that the sanctions imposed by the EU do not allow Gasum to terminate the agreement with Gazprom Export, but are force majeure circumstances for the purchase or import of Russian LNG.

To understand, the capacity of the joint project of Gazprom and Novatek, Cryogas-Vysotsk, which supplies LNG to the Finnish company, is 660 thousand tons per year.

In 2022, Finland imported 195 thousand tons of LNG. In addition, Swedish and Belgian companies purchased fuel there. Demand was high enough that in 2022 the company even produced 707 thousand tons.
