Germany Examines Hundreds of Evidence of Russian War Crimes in Ukraine

Jun 18, 2022

The Federal Criminal Authority of Germany (BKA) has received several hundred pieces of evidence of war crimes by Russia in Ukraine.

This was said in an interview with Welt am Sonntag by the head of the SCA Holger Muench,

He noted that the agency is investigating the direct perpetrators of the crimes - that is, the Russian military, and Russia's top military and political leadership.

"Our clear goal is to identify those responsible for the atrocities, prove their actions through our investigation and make sure that they are brought to justice," Muench added.

The head of the VKA explained that the investigating agencies are not investigating directly in Ukraine but are providing the necessary technical support.

"In principle, there could be a situation where the VKA would work on the ground. But this first requires an international mandate and the security of our employees," he said.

Earlier, German Justice Minister Marko Buschmann said his country had launched a preliminary investigation into war crimes committed by the Russian military in Ukraine and could bring them to justice.
