Jun 25, 2024

The German Ministry of Defense plans to order more than 2 million artillery shells to replenish the Bundeswehr's warehouses, with the purchase price reaching a record 15 billion euros.

This was reported by Spiegel, citing its sources.

Defense Minister Borys Pistorius allegedly submitted a draft agreement with manufacturers Diehl Defense and Nammo Raufoss to the Bundestag's budget committee. The document refers to the purchase of up to 2.35 million 155 mm artillery shells, with a maximum deal value of up to €15 billion, which Spiegel calls a "record."

These volumes are to be produced by 2030. Initially, however, Germany wanted to order 200,000 rounds of ammunition to replenish its stockpiles.

However, the document states that NATO members and Ukraine can order additional volumes under this agreement, and the overall framework of the agreement provides for the possibility of purchasing 2.3 million rounds of ammunition.

In this way, Pistorius wants to ensure that manufacturers will be interested in building additional production lines and increasing production in Germany. The Ministry of Finance also shares this approach.
