The EU had to condemn Russia on behalf of Borrell

Jun 26, 2024

The EU has condemned as "absolutely unreasonable" the decision of the Russian authorities to block access to more than eighty European media outlets in Russia - and because of Hungary's position, the EU was unable to express its condemnation on behalf of the 27 member states.

The statement was published on behalf of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, according to Yevropeiska Pravda.

Earlier, the European Commission said that the EU's reaction would be expressed on behalf of the head of diplomacy after "they tried" to publish a joint statement of 27 countries, which was not supported by "one particular" country.

Radio Liberty's Europe editor, Rikard Dzosvyak, clarified that the joint statement was blocked by Hungary. It is noteworthy that among the European media whose activities have been restricted by Russia is the Hungarian portal 444.hu.

"This decision further restricts access to free and independent information and expands the already harsh media censorship in Russia. The banned European media outlets operate in accordance with journalistic principles and standards. They provide factual information, including to the Russian audience, in particular about Russia's illegal war of aggression against Ukraine," Borrell said in a statement.

He emphasized that the Russian disinformation and propaganda outlets against which the EU has imposed restrictive measures are not free and independent media. Their broadcasting in the EU was suspended because these media outlets are under the control of the Russian authorities and play an important role in supporting the war against Ukraine.

"Respect for freedom of speech and media is a core value for the EU. The EU will continue to support the accessibility of factual information to audiences in Russia," the statement said.
