Borrell explains the difference between Ukraine and Israel

Apr 16, 2024

The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, has said that he considers the situation in Ukraine and Israel to be different when it comes to the protection of airspace by the allies.

According to Yevropeiska Pravda, he said this at a press conference following a meeting of EU foreign ministers on 16 April.

According to Borrell, the situation when Western allies helped Israel shoot down Iranian missiles and drones and the situation with Russian attacks in Ukraine are "two different things that cannot be compared."

First of all, he recalled that Israel has a multi-level air defense system called the Iron Dome, and deploying its equivalent in Europe would require a lot of time and financial resources that are not available.

"Secondly, during the Iranian attack, the missiles flew over air bases belonging to France, the United States, and Jordan. And they also defended their bases. This is not the case in Ukraine. There are no air bases owned by the US, Britain, or Jordan," the EU's top diplomat added.
